In this lesson, you are going to see four different words that can be used as the word that in Thai. You will learn how and when to use them.

ที่ (thîi) as the word that in Thai
ที่ (thîi) is used as a relative pronoun. You use it to refer to a noun or phrase before it. It can replace English relative pronouns like that, which, who, whom, and where.
You use it after a classifier but it’s also acceptable to use it after a noun.
Structure(1) : noun + classifier + ที่ (thîi)
ผู้ชาย คน ที่ ใส่ หมวก เป็น พี่ ฉัน
– phûu-chaay khon thîi sây mùak pen phîi chán.
– A man who wears a hat is my older brother.
นี่ คือ อัน ที่ ฉัน ชอบ
– nîi khɨɨ ʔan thîi chán chɔ̂ɔp.
– This is the one that I like.
Structure(2) : noun + ที่ (thîi)
เขา ขาย บ้าน ที่ ฉัน รัก ไป
– kháw khǎay bâan thîi chán rák pay.
– He sold the house that I love.
มัน เป็น หมา ที่ อยู่ กับ ฉัน มา 10 ปี
– man pen mǎa thîi yùu kàp chán maa 10 pii.
– It is the dog that has lived with me for 10 years.
ฉัน ชอบ ที่ ที่ ฉัน อยู่ ตอนนี้ มากๆ
– chán chɔ̂ɔp thîi thîi chán yùu tɔɔn-níi mâak mâak.
– I like the place where I live right now very much.
วันนี้ เป็น วัน ที่ ดี
– wan-níi pen wan thîi dii.
– Today is a day that is good. (Today is a good day.)
ว่า (wâa) – that as a conjunction
It is used as a conjunction to connect a sentence. You use this after a verb, especially verbs like to speak, tell, think, mean, etc.
Structure(3) : verb + ว่า (wâa) + sentence
เขา คิด ว่า ภาษาไทย ยาก
– kháw khít wâa phaasǎa Thai yâak.
– He thinks that Thai language is difficult.
เขา บอก (ผม) ว่า (เขา) จะ ไม่ มา วันนี้
– kháw bɔ̀ɔk (phǒm) wâa (kháw) ca mây maa wan-níi.
– She told (me) that (she) will not come today.
ฉัน หมายความ ว่า ไม่ มี อะไร ต้อง กังวล
– chán mǎay-khwaam wâa mây mii ʔaray tɔ̂ŋ kaŋwon.
– I mean (that) nothing to worry about.
ผม พูด ว่า ผม ไม่ เป็น อะไร
– phǒm phûut wâa phǒm mây pen ʔaray.
– I said that I was okay.
นั่น – that as a pronoun
You use นั่น (nân) [falling tone] to refer to a person, thing, idea, etc that has already been mentioned, is already known about, or a person or thing that is not near you.
นั่น อะไร
– nân ʔaray.
– What is that?
นั่น ไม่ใช่ รถ ผม
– nân mây chây rót phǒm.
– That’s not my car.
นั่น เพื่อน ผม
– nân phɨ̂an phǒm.
– That’s my friend.
นั่น เป็น ความคิด ที่ ดี มาก
– nân pen khwaam-khít thîi dii mâak.
– That is a very good idea.
นั้น – that as a determiner
You use นั้น (nán) [high tone] after a classifier to show which person or thing you mean, and it is not near you.
Structure(4) : noun + classifier + นั้น
ฉัน ชอบ เสื้อ ตัว นั้น
– chán chɔ̂ɔp sɨ̂a tua nán.
– I like that shirt.
ผู้ชาย คน นั้น เป็น ใคร
– phûu-chaay khon nán pen khray.
– Who is that guy?
เขา เขียน หนังสือ เล่ม นั้น
– kháw khǐan nǎŋ-sɨ̌ɨ lêm nán.
– She wrote that book.
รถ คัน นั้น ไม่ แพง
– rót khan nán mây phææŋ.
– That car is not expensive.
