Let’s learn these two most common words to say ask in Thai which are ถาม (thǎam) and ขอ (khɔ̌ɔ), and see how to use them in a proper situation.
ถาม (thǎam) – to ask a question in Thai
ถาม (thǎam) is used when asking someone about something because you want an answer to your question.
ครู ชอบ นักเรียน ที่ ชอบ ถาม
– khruu chɔ̂ɔp nák-rian thîi chɔ̂ɔp thǎam.
– The teacher likes a student who likes asking a question.
ผม อยาก รู้ แต่ ไม่ กล้า ถาม
– phǒm yàak rúu, tæ̀æ mây klâa thǎam.
– I want to know but did not dare to ask.
Structure(1): ถาม (thǎam) + someone + ว่า (wâa) + a question
เขา ถาม ฉัน ว่า ฉัน พูด ไทย ได้ ไหม
– kháw thǎam chán wâa chán phûut Thai dâay máy.
– He asked me if I could speak Thai or not.
คุณ ถาม เขา ว่า อะไร
– khun thǎam kháw wâa ʔaray.
– What did you ask her?
Note: The word ว่า (wâa) in the above structure is used as the word if in English for this context. Do not use it exactly like the word if in a Conditional Sentence.
ขอ (khɔ̌ɔ) – to ask for something in Thai
Use the word ขอ (khɔ̌ɔ) when you want to ask for something.
Structure(2): ขอ (khɔ̌ɔ) + noun
เขา ขอ เงิน ผม
– kháw khɔ̌ɔ ŋən phǒm.
– He asked me for money.
คุณ จะ ขอ อะไร จาก ผม
– khun ca khɔ̌ɔ ʔaray càak phǒm.
– What will you ask from me?
ฉัน จะ ขอ จักรยาน คัน เก่า ของ เขา
– chán ca khɔ̌ɔ càkkrayaan khan kàw khɔ̌ɔŋ kháw.
– I will ask for his old bicycle.
น้องชาย ขอ โต๊ะ ทำงาน ฉัน
– nɔ́ɔŋ-chaay khɔ̌ɔ tó tham-ŋaan chán.
– My younger brother asked for my desk.
Ask for something at a restaurant
Use the word ขอ (khɔ̌ɔ) at a restaurant or shop when you are asking for something in a polite way. It sounds more polite than the word เอา (ʔaw).
ขอ ผัดไทย ที่ นึง ค่ะ
– khɔ̌ɔ Pad Thai thîi nɨŋ khâ.
– May I have Pad Thai for 1, please?
ขอ เบียร์ ช้าง 2 ขวด ครับ
– khɔ̌ɔ bia cháaŋ sɔ̌ɔŋ khùat khráp.
– May I have 2 bottles of Chang beer, please?
ขอ ช้อน ได้ไหม คะ
– khɔ̌ɔ chɔ́ɔn dâay máy khá.
– May I have spoon please?
ขอ (khɔ̌ɔ) – to ask for permission in Thai
ขอ (khɔ̌ɔ) can be used when you ask for permission to do something.
Structure(3): ขอ (khɔ̌ɔ) + verb
ผม ขอ เข้า ไป ได้ ไหม
– phǒm khɔ̌ɔ khâw pay dâay máy.
– May I come in?
ลูก ขอ ไป นอน บ้าน เพื่อน
– lûuk khɔ̌ɔ pay nɔɔn bâan phɨ̂an.
– My children asked for my permission to stay over at his friend’s house.
ฉัน ขอ นั่ง ด้วย ได้ไหม
– chán khɔ̌ɔ nâŋ dûay dâay máy.
– May I sit together?
เขา ขอ ใช้ คอมพิวเตอร์ ผม
– kháw khɔ̌ɔ cháy khɔmphíwtə̂ə phǒm.
– She asked for my permission to use my computer.
ขอให้ (khɔ̌ɔ hây) – to ask someone to do something in Thai
Use ขอให้ (khɔ̌ɔ hây) when you say that you ask someone to do something.
ฉัน ขอให้ เพื่อน ไป หา หมอ กับ ฉัน
– chán khɔ̌ɔ hây phɨ̂an pay hǎa mɔ̌ɔ kàp chán.
– I asked my friend to go to see a doctor with me.
คุณ ขอให้ ผม ทำ อะไร ผม ก็ จะ ทำ
– khun khɔ̌ɔ hây phǒm tham ʔaray phǒm kɔ̂ɔ ca tham.
– Whatever you ask me to do, I will do.
ขอให้ (khɔ̌ɔ hây) – to wish
You can also use ขอให้ (khɔ̌ɔ hây) when you wish something to happen or when you wish somebody something.
ฉัน ขอ ให้ คุณ มี ความสุข
– chán khɔ̌ɔ hây khun mii khwaam-sùk.
– I wish you happy.
ผม ขอให้ ฝน ไม่ ตก วันนี้
– phǒm khɔ̌ɔ hây fǒn mây tòk wan-níi
– I wish it not rain today.
