Although the word เหมือน (mɨ̌an) is the most commonly used word to say same in Thai, it is not the only word we use. In this lesson, you will learn how to say same with different words and in different contexts in the Thai language.

เหมือนกัน (mɨ̌an kan) – same in Thai
Use the word เหมือนกัน (mɨ̌an kan) when mentioning that two or more things, situations, etc. are the same as each other.
เหมือน (mɨ̌an) means same and กัน (kan) means each other. There are two possible sentence structures to use this word.
Structure(1) : A + กับ (kàp) + B + เหมือนกัน (mɨ̌an kan)
– rót khan níi kàp rót khan nán mɨ̌an kan.
– This car and that car are the same.
– kháw kàp phɔ̂ɔ nâa mɨ̌an kan.
– He and his dad have the same face. (He and his father look alike.)
– phǒm kàp khun chɔ̂ɔp tham ʔaray mɨ̌an kan.
– I and you like doing the same things. (You and I like doing the same thing.)
Structure(2) : A + เหมือน (mɨ̌an) + [กับ (kàp)] + B
– rót khan níi mɨ̌an (kàp) rót khan nán
– This car is the same as that car.
– kháw nâa mɨ̌an (kàp) phɔ̂ɔ.
– His face is the same as his dad’s face. (He looks like his father.)
– phǒm chɔ̂ɔp tham ʔaray mɨ̌an (kàp) khun.
– I like doing things the same as you do. (I like doing things like you do.)
เหมือนกัน (mɨ̌an kan) – same as me
You can say เหมือนกัน (mɨ̌an-kan) when responding to others to show that you feel the same or something is the same for you. It can be equivalent to me too in English.
A:
– chán chɔ̂ɔp faŋ phleeŋ Jazz thîi-sùt.
– I like listening to Jazz music the most.
B:
– mɨ̌an kan.
– Me too.
A:
– phǒm mây khâw-cay kham níi.
– I don’t understand this word.
B:
– mɨ̌an kan.
– Same as me.
A:
– mɨ̂awaan-níi chán pay trùat Covid maa.
– I went for a Covid test yesterday.
B:
– mɨ̌an kan.
– Me too.
เหมือนเดิม (mɨ̌an-dəəm) – same as before in Thai
You use this to say that the quality, condition, situation, etc. is the same as before or as it has been.
Structure(3) : verb/adjective + เหมือนเดิม (mɨ̌an-dəəm)
– sìp pii phàan pay, khun yaŋ duu mɨ̌an-dəəm.
– 10 years have passed, and you still look the same.
– kruŋthêep rɔ́ɔn mɨ̌an-dəəm.
– Bangkok is as hot as it has always been.
– phǒm chɔ̂ɔp Chiangmai mɨ̌an-dəəm.
– I like Chiangmai the same as before.
– kháw yaŋ rák khun mɨ̌an-dəəm.
– He still loves you as he always does.
เหมือนเดิม (mɨ̌an-dəəm) – same as usual
You can say เหมือนเดิม (mɨ̌an-dəəm) when responding to others to show that you feel the same or something is the same as it has been.
A:
– sawàtdii B, wanníi pen yaŋŋay bâaŋ.
– Hello B, how are you today?
B:
– mɨ̌an-dəəm ná. lǽæw khun lâ.
– Same as usual. How about you?
A:
– mɨ̌an-kan.
– Me too.
เดิม (dəəm) – one same thing in Thai
You use this word to say that a person, thing, place, time, situation, etc. does not change throughout time. Use it with a classifier.
Structure(4) : noun + classifier + เดิม (dəəm)
– chán yùu bâan lǎŋ dəəm maa 20 pii lǽæw.
– I have lived in the same house for 20 years.
– phǒm rian phaasǎa Thai kàp khruu khon dəəm.
– I study the Thai language with the same teacher.
– ʔaathít nâa raw cəə kan weelaa dəəm ná.
– Next week, we will meet at the same time.
– kháw kin kaafææ ráan dəəm thúk wan.
– She drinks coffee at the same shop every day.
เดียวกัน (diaw-kan) – the same one
เดียวกัน (diaw-kan) is used when talking about the same person, thing, time, situation, etc., and not a different one. Use it with a classifier.
Structure(5) : noun + classifier + เดียวกัน (diaw-kan)
– chán kàp phîi-sǎaw yùu bâan lǎŋ diaw-kan.
– My older sister and I live in the same house.
– raw cháy rót khan diaw-kan.
– We use the same car.
– kháw kàp phǒm rian phaasǎa Thai kàp khruu khon diaw-kan.
– He and I study the Thai language with the same teacher.
– raw mii phɨ̂an khon diaw-kan.
– We have the same friend. (We have a mutual friend.)
– raw kə̀ət pii diaw-kan.
– We were born in the same year.
พร้อมกัน (phrɔ́ɔm-kan) – same time
พร้อมกัน (phrɔ́ɔm kan) shows that two or more actions occur at the same time.
Structure(6) : verb + พร้อมกัน (phrɔ́ɔm-kan)
– raw pay tham-ŋaan phrɔ́ɔm-kan thúk wan.
– We go to work at the same time every day.
– fǒn tòk phrɔ́ɔm-kan nay lǎay caŋwàt.
– It rains at the same time in many provinces.
– phǒm chɔ̂ɔp tham ʔaray lǎay yàaŋ phrɔ́ɔm-kan.
– I like to do many things at the same time.
– khun yàak klàp bâan phrɔ́ɔm-kan máy
– Do you want to go back home at the same time?
