Using the word ‘mɨ̌an / เหมือน’ as the word ‘same’ in Thai language
When you are comparing two or more things which are the same, you will use mɨ̌an (เหมือน) in Thai language. There are more words in Thai which can be translated as the word ‘same’ but we are not going to look at those words in this lesson.
There are two ways you can use this word in a sentence. See the structure below.
– A mɨ̌an (kàp) B
– A เหมือน (กับ) B
OR
– A kàp B mɨ̌an kan
– A กับ B เหมือน กัน
Examples:
1.
– rót khan níi mɨ̌an (kàp) rót khan nán
– รถ คัน นี้ เหมือน (กับ) รถ คัน นั้น
– This car is same as that car.
OR
– rót khan níi kàp rót khan nán mɨ̌an kan
– รถ คัน นี้ กับ รถ คัน นั้น เหมือน กัน
– This car and that car are the same.
2.
– kháw nâa mɨ̌an (kàp) phɔ̂ɔ
– เขา หน้า เหมือน (กับ) พ่อ
– His face is same as his dad’s face.
OR
– kháw kàp phɔ̂ɔ nâa mɨ̌an kan
– เขา กับ พ่อ หน้า เหมือน กัน
– He and his dad have the same face.
3.
– phǒm chɔ̂ɔp tham ʔaray mɨ̌an khun
– ผม ชอบ ทำ อะไร เหมือน คุณ
– I like doing things the same as you do.
OR
– phǒm kàp khun chɔ̂ɔp tham ʔaray mɨ̌an kan
– ผม กับ คุณ ชอบ ทำ อะไร เหมือน กัน
– I and you like doing the same things.
mɨ̌an-kan (เหมือนกัน) as me too in English
The words mɨ̌an-kan (เหมือนกัน) can be used as ‘me too’ as well. Let’s see the example situations below.
1.
A: chán chɔ̂ɔp faŋ phleeŋ Jazz thîi-sùt
B: mɨ̌an kan
A: ฉัน ชอบ ฟัง เพลง แจ๊ส ที่สุด
B: เหมือน กัน
A: I like listening to Jazz music the most.
B: Me too
2.
A: phǒm mây khâw-cay kham níi
B: mɨ̌an kan
A: ผม ไม่ เข้าใจ คำ นี้
B: เหมือน กัน
A: I do not understand this word.
B: Me too
3.
A: mɨ̂awaan-níi chán pay trùat Covid maa
B: mɨ̌an kan
A: เมื่อวานนี้ ฉัน ไป ตรวจ โควิด มา
B: เหมือน กัน
A: I went for Covid test yesterday.
B: Me too
From the examples you can see that the word mɨ̌an (kan) / เหมือน (กัน) is used to compare between 2 or more factors. In the next lesson, there will be a comparison between the word mɨ̌an-kan / เหมือนกัน and mɨ̌an-dəəm / เหมือนเดิม. They are translated as ‘the same’ but the are used differently.
