Using the word หลัง – After in Thai Language
I have written about how to use the word BEFORE in previous lesson. (Click here to read about it.) Today we will look at how to use the word AFTER in the Thai Language including the terms หลัง (lǎŋ), หลังจาก (lǎŋ-càak), หลังจากนั้น (lǎŋ càak nán), หลังจากนี้ (lǎŋ càak níi).
หลัง (lǎŋ), หลังจาก (lǎŋ-càak) = After
These two terms are replaceable and they are used to show when an event or time has happened or when someone has done something. To show a sequence of actions or events.
For example:
1.
– khun ca tham ʔaray lǎŋ lə̂ək ŋaan
– คุณจะทำอะไรหลังเลิกงาน
– What will you do after work?
2.
– lǎŋ càak fǒn tòk, dæ̀æt kɔ̂ɔ ʔɔ̀ɔk.
– หลังจากฝนตก แดดก็ออก
– After the rain, the sun then shine.
3.
– phûak-khàw mây mii khwaam-sùk lǎŋ tæ̀ŋ-ŋaan
– พวกเขาไม่มีความสุขหลังแต่งงาน
– They are not happy after getting married.
4.
– chán ca pay hǎa khun lǎŋ càak pay duu nǎŋ
– ฉันจะไปหาคุณหลังจากไปดูหนัง
– I will go to see you after going to a movie.
หลังจากนั้น (lǎŋ càak nán) = After that
This word is simply used just like its English translation ‘after that’. The term หลังจากนั้น (lǎŋ càak nán) literally means after from that. Let’s see how it is used in a sentence.
For example:
1.
– phǒm hěn kháw dəən khâw bâan. lǎŋ càak nán phǒm kɔ̂ɔ dâay-yin sǐaŋ pɨɨn
– ผมเห็นเขาเดินเข้าบ้าน หลังจากนั้นผมก็ได้ยินเสียงปืน
– I saw him walk into the house. After that I heard a gun shot.
2.
– khun phûut ʔaray lǎŋ càak nán
– คุณพูดอะไรหลังจากนั้น
– What did you say after that?
3.
– chán khàp rót pay sòŋ lûuk thîi rooŋ-rian, lǎŋ càak nán chán kɔ̂ɔ klàp bâan.
– ฉันขับรถไปส่งลูกที่โรงเรียน หลังจากนั้นฉันก็กลับบ้าน
– I drove to send my kid to school, after that I came back home.
4.
– khun ʔaw khayà pay thíŋ kɔ̀ɔn, lǎŋ càak nán khun yàak tham ʔaray kɔ̂ɔ tham
– คุณเอาขยะไปทิ้งก่อน หลังจากนั้นคุณอยากทำอะไรก็ทำ
– You take a trash to dispose first, after that you can do whatever you like.
หลังจากนี้ (lǎŋ càak níi) = After this
This term can be used as a term after this, as well as, a term from now on. Let’s look at how it is used in a sentence.
For example:
1.
– lǎŋ càak níi khun ca tham ʔaray
– หลังจากนี้คุณจะทำอะไร
– What will you do after this?
2.
– phǒm ca mây kin plaa dìp ʔìik lǽæw lǎŋ càak níi
– ผมจะไม่กินปลาดิบอีกแล้วหลังจากนี้
– I will not eat raw fish anymore from now on.
3.
– lǎŋ càak níi, chán wǎŋ wâa raw ca dâay cəə kan ʔìik
– หลังจากนี้ ฉันหวังว่าเราจะได้เจอกันอีก
– After this, I hope we will be able to meet again.
4.
– chán ca ʔɔ̀ɔk-kamlaŋ-kaay mâak khɨ̂n lǎŋ càak níi
– ฉันจะออกกำลังกายมากขึ้นหลังจากนี้
– I will exercise more from now on.
The word หลัง (lǎŋ) is more than AFTER
หลัง (lǎŋ) also has other meanings as well such as a back (n. the part of the body between the neck and legs, on the opposite side to the stomach and chest), back (n. not at front), and a classifier for a house!
