Different uses of the word ləəy (เลย) in Thai Language

1. ləəy (เลย) in ‘not … at all’ expression
ləəy (เลย) in a negative sentence gives the meaning of ‘at all‘. Let’s see a structure and examples below.
Structure:
– mây + verb / adjective / adverb + ləəy
– ไม่ + คำกริยา / คำวิเศษณ์ + เลย
– not + verb / adjective / adverb + at all
Example:
– tɔɔn-níi sèetthakìt Thai mây dii ləəy
– ตอนนี้ เศรษฐกิจ ไทย ไม่ ดี เลย
– Now, Thailand’s economy is not good at all.
– rót khan níi phææŋ, tæ̀æ mây rew ləəy
– รถ คัน นี้ แพง แต่ ไม่ เร็ว เลย
– This car is expensive, but not fast at all.
– chán mây chɔ̂ɔp sathǎanákaan níi ləəy
– ฉัน ไม่ ชอบ สถานการณ์ นี้ เลย
– I do not like this situation at all.
2. ləəy (เลย) as the words now, right now
ləəy (เลย) can be used as the words now or right now in an imperative sentence, and also when you want to say that you will take an action now.
Structure:
– verb + ləəy
– คำกริยา + เลย
– verb + now, right now
For example:
– khun khuan ca pay ləəy
– คุณ ควร จะ ไป เลย
– You should go now.
– kin ləəy ná. mây tɔ̂ŋ rɔɔ phǒm.
– กิน เลย นะ ไม่ ต้อง รอ ผม
– (You can) eat now. Do not wait for me.
– phǒm ca sɨ́ɨ ləəy. phǒm mây mii weelaa lǽæw.
– ผม จะ ซื้อ เลย ผม ไม่ มี เวลา แล้ว
– I will buy now. I do not have time anymore.
3. ləəy (เลย) as the words so, therefore, that’s why
This function of ləəy (เลย) is explained in a previous lesson ‘A casual way to say ‘so’ in Thai Language’. It is used as the words so, therefore, and that is why. In this lesson, I will give you some examples of this function. You can look at more details from the previous lesson mentioned above.
Example:
– chán mây sabaay ləəy pay hǎa mɔ̌ɔ
– ฉัน ไม่ สบาย เลย ไป หา หมอ
– I was sick, so I went to see a doctor.
– kháw cay-rɔ́ɔn ləəy mây mii khray chɔ̂ɔp kháw
– เขา ใจร้อน เลย ไม่ มี ใคร ชอบ เขา
– She is hot-headed,that’s why no one likes her.
– sǐaŋ daŋ mâak phǒm ləəy mây dâay-yin khun
– เสียงดัง มาก ผม เลย ไม่ ได้ยิน คุณ
– It was noisy, that’s why I did not hear you
4. ləəy (เลย) after the adverbs caŋ (จัง), mâak (มาก), yə́ (เยอะ)
In spoken mode, you may hear very often that the word ləəy (เลย) is used after the words like caŋ (จัง), mâak (มาก) and yə́ (เยอะ). When it is used after these words, it emphasizes the degree of those words. ləəy (เลย) does not change the meaning of the sentence. It is just more emphasizing.
For example:
– wanníi khun sǔay caŋ ləəy
– วันนี้ คุณ สวย จัง เลย
– Today you are very beautiful.
– nǎŋ rɨ̂aŋ níi sanúk mâak ləəy
– หนัง เรื่อง นี้ สนุก มาก เลย
– This movie is very enjoyable.
– mii khon pay thêetsakaan dontrii yə́ ləəy
– มี คน ไป เทศกาล ดนตรี เยอะ เลย
– There were lots of people going to music festival.
