โทรศัพท์ – to call on phone in Thai language
This lesson we will look at how to use a word โทรศัพท์ (thoorasàp) as a word to make a phone call in Thai language. Since I have seen some students got confused when trying to use it.
Let’s start with the word โทรศัพท์ (thoorasàp) which means a telephone, a phone, and it can be used as a verb to call or to make a phone call. Now let’s see how we use this word as both a noun and a verb.
Note: โทรศัพท์มือถือ (thoorasàp mɨɨ-thɨ̌ɨ) means a mobile phone. However, you can use either โทรศัพท์ (thoorasàp) or มือถือ (mɨɨ-thɨ̌ɨ) alone to refer to it.
โทรศัพท์ (thoorasàp) = A telephone
1.
– kháw ca pay sɨ́ɨ thoorasàp mày yen níi
– เขาจะไปซื้อโทรศัพท์ใหม่เย็นนี้
– She will go to buy a new phone this evening.
2.
– khun hěn mɨɨ-thɨ̌ɨ phǒm máy
– คุณเห็นมือถือผมไหม
– Do you see my mobile phone?
3.
– chán ca ʔaw thoorasàp mɨɨ-thɨɨ̌ pay sɔ̂m
– ฉันเอาจะโทรศัพท์มือถือไปซ่อม
– I will bring my mobile phone to get fixed.
โทรศัพท์ (thoorasàp) = to call, to make a phone call
The word โทรศัพท์ (thoorasàp) can be used as a verb to call or to make a phone call. It has a shorten version which is โทร (thoo). Below you will see how to use this word correctly in a verb form.
Structure 1: To call someone
– โทร + (ไป) + หา + บุคคล
– thoo + (pay) + hǎa + a person
Note: You can omit the word ไป (pay) when you say.
1.
– chán ca thoo (pay) hǎa khun khɨɨn níi
– ฉันจะโทร (ไป) หา คุณคืนนี้
– I will call you tonight.
2.
– khun ca thoo (pay) hǎa kháw máy
– คุณจะโทร (ไป) หา เขาไหม
– Will you call him?
Structure 2: Someone call you
– โทร + (มา) + หา + บุคคล
– thoo + (maa) + hǎa + a person
Note: You can omit the word มา (maa) when you say.
1.
– mɨ̂a-waan-níi rooŋ-phayaabaan thoo (maa) hǎa chán
– เมื่อวานนี้โรงพยาบาล โทร (มา) หา ฉัน
– The hospital called me yesterday.
2.
– khun ca thoo (maa) hǎa phǒm máy
– คุณจะโทร (มา) หาผมไหม
– Will you call me?
You can see that in both structures you can omit the word ไป (pay) or มา (maa) and have only หา (hǎa) left. Both ไป (pay) or มา (maa) is there to tell the direction of the phone call whether the call go out or the call come in. Remember that the word หา (hǎa) is mandatory in both structures.
Unlike the first two structures, หา (hǎa) is not necessary in this structure 3 when you make a phone call to a place.
Structure 3: To call to a place
– โทร + ไปหา / ไป / หา + สถานที่
– thoo + pay hǎa / pay / hǎa + a place
Note: You can use any one among those three.

– khun chûay thoo pay hǎa rooŋ-rian dâay-máy
– คุณช่วย โทรไปหา โรงเรียนได้ไหม
– Can you call to the school?
2.
– phǒm ca thoo pay bɔrisàt phrûŋníi
– ผมจะ โทรไป บริษัทพรุ่งนี้
– I will call a company tomorrow.
3.
– fææn phǒm thoo hǎa rooŋ-rææm phrɔ́ raw yàak cɔɔŋ hɔ̂ŋ phák
– แฟนผม โทรหา โรงเเรม เพราะเราอยากจองห้องพัก
– My partner called the hotel because we want to book a room.
The above examples show how to say that you call someone or someone call you. Now we will look at how to say you answer or not answer a phone call. The word รับ (ráp) will be used in this situation. Please be reminded that we do not use the word ตอบ (tɔ̀ɔp) in this context even its translation means to answer.
รับโทรศัพท์ = To answer a phone call
There are two ways to say to answer a phone call which are 1) รับโทรศัพท์ (ráp thoorasàp) and 2) รับสาย (ráp sǎay). The word สาย (sǎay) literally means line. So, in this case, it refers to a phone line. In some contexts which the listener know you are talking about a phone call, you can just use the word รับ (ráp) alone. Let’s see examples below.
1.
– chán thoo pay, thammay mây ráp
– ฉันโทรไป ทำไมไม่รับ
– I called you, why did not you answered?
2.
– phǒm ráp sǎay khun lǽæw, tæ̀æ mây dâay-yin ʔaray
– ผมรับสายคุณแล้ว แต่ไม่ได้ยินอะไร
– I answered your call, but did not hear anything.
3.
– yàa lɨɨm ráp thoorasàp lûuk-kháa ná
– อย่าลืมรับโทรศัพท์ลูกค้านะ
– Don’t forget to answer a phone call from the customer.
