We use the word แฟน (fææn) not just for referring to our boyfriend, girlfriend, or partner. We also use it just like in the English language when referring to a football fan, a boxing fan, a music fan, a movie fan, etc.
แฟนบอล (fææn bɔn) = a football fan

– phǒm pen fææn bɔn thiim châat Thai.
– I’m a fan of the Thailand national football team.
แฟนมวย (fææn muay) = a boxing fan

แฟนภาพยนตร์ (fææn phâap-phayon) / แฟนหนัง (fææn nǎŋ) = a movie fan
For example,
– chán pen fææn phâap-phayon kawlǐi.
– I’m a fan of Korean movies.
– phǒm pen fææn nǎŋ búu.
– I’m a fan of action movies.
Note: ภาพยนตร์ (phâap-phayon) is a more formal word for movie.
Nowadays, It is very common to hear Thai people use the word แฟน (fææn) to refer to their ภรรยา (phanrayaa) wives or สามี (sǎamii) husbands as well.
Even though we use the word แฟน (fææn) in all the above meanings and contexts, we do not use this word to refer to a fan which is a machine used to cool the air. For that, we say พัดลม (phát-lom).
