Never Say Never in Thai Language
If you look for a definition of the word ‘never’ in Thai, you will probably see the word ‘ไม่เคย (mây-khəəy)’ on top of the list. However, the word ไม่เคย (mây-khəəy) cannot be always translated as the word never in English. This lesson, you will see how to say never in different contexts.
Say Never when you have no experience doing something
Let’s start with using the word never in the past and present perfect tense. Something like, I never talk to him. or I have never been to his house. In Thai, you will use the word ‘ไม่เคย (mây-khəəy)’ in this context. Thai people use ไม่เคย (mây-khəəy) when we want to say that we have no experience doing something before until the moment of speaking.
For Example:
1.
– kháw mây khəəy pay Chiang Rai.
– เขา ไม่เคย ไป เชียงราย
– She has never been to Chiang Rai.
2.
– chán mây khəəy hěn phɔ̂ɔ rɔ́ɔŋ-hâay.
– ฉัน ไม่เคย เห็น พ่อ ร้องไห้
– I never see my dad cries.
3.
– phǒm mây khəəy phaa phɨ̂an maa bâan
– ผม ไม่เคย พา เพื่อน มา บ้าน
– I never bring my friends home.
4.
– khruu khon kàw mây khəəy bɔ̀ɔk yàaŋ níi.
– ครู คน เก่า ไม่เคย บอก อย่าง นี้
– My previous teacher never told me like this.
Say never when you will never to something in the future
Never use the word ไม่เคย (mây-khəəy) when you want to say that you will never do something in the future. There are two common phrases that you can use to say this in Thai which are:
- ไม่มีวัน (mây mii wan) = there is no day
- ไม่มีทาง (mây mii thaaŋ) = there is no way
Let’s see them being used in a sentence below.
1.
– chán ca mây mii wan klàp pay hǎa kháw
– ฉัน จะ ไม่มีวัน กลับ ไป หา เขา
– I will never go back to him. (Direct Translation: There will be no day that I will go back to him.
2.
– mây mii thaaŋ thîi kháw ca yùu thîi-nîi
– ไม่มีทาง ที่ เขา จะ อยู่ ที่นี่
– He will never live here. (Direct Translation: There is no way that he will live here.)
3.
– phǒm ca mây mii wan sày sɨ̂a tua níi
– ผม จะ ไม่มีวัน ใส่ เสื้อ ตัว นี้
– I will never wear this shirt. (Direct Translation: There will be no day that I will wear this shirt.)
4.
– chán mây mii thaaŋ chɨ̂an kháw næ̂æ-nɔɔn
– ฉัน ไม่มีทาง เชื่อ เขา แน่นอน
– I will never believe him for sure. (Direct Translation: There is no way that I believe him.)
Say Never to tell someone not to do something
When you want to tell someone to never do something, you will use the word อย่า (yàa) which is also translated as Don’t, instead of using ไม่เคย (mây khəəy). Let’s see below.
For example:
1.
– yàa phûut wâa mây mii wan
– อย่า พูด ว่า ไม่มีวัน
– Never say never
2.
– yàa tham yàaŋ-nán
– อย่า ทำ อย่างนั้น
– Never do that
3.
– yàa lɔɔŋ yaa-sèep-tìt
– อย่า ลอง ยาเสพติด
– Never try drugs
Therefore, you can see that there are mainly three different ways to say never in Thai including ไม่เคย (mây khəəy), ไม่มีวัน (mây mii wan) or ไม่มีทาง (mây mii thaaŋ), อย่า (yàa) depending on what expressions you are using.
