How to say ‘I lost something’ in Thai language
Often that my students use the word หาย (hǎay) to say that they lose something. They would say something like ‘ผมหายเงิน (phǒm hǎay ŋən)’ which they wanted to say ‘I lost my money.’ But that is not how you say it. Today we will see how to say ‘I lost something’ in Thai.
I lost something = ทำ something หาย
To say I lost something in Thai, you will use the word ทำ (tham) which means to make and followed by the thing that you lost, and then use the word หาย (hǎay) which means disappear. See the structure below.
– ทำ + บางอย่าง + หาย
– tham + something + hǎay
– make + something + disappear (I lost something.)
For example:
1.
– chán tham thoorasàp hǎay
– ฉันทำโทรศัพท์หาย
– I lost my phone.
2.
– khun tham kuncææ bâan hǎay chây-máy
– คุณทำกุญแจบ้านหายใช่ไหม
– You lost the house keys right?
3.
– kháw tham nǎŋsɨ̌ɨ-dəən thaaŋ hǎay
– เขาทำหนังสือเดินทางหาย
– She lost her passport.
4.
– khun tham bàt-khreedìt hǎay thîi-nǎy
– คุณทำบัตรเครดิตหายที่ไหน
– Where did you lose your credit card?
Can I use หาย (hǎay) alone to say I lost something?
Yes, you can use the word หาย (hǎay) alone to say you lost something or something is missing, However, the structure will need to be different from the previous structure. See the structure below.
– บางอย่าง + หาย
– Something + hǎay
– Something + disappear (Something is missing.)
For example:
1.
– thoorasàp hǎay
– โทรศัพท์หาย
– My phone disappeared. (I lost my phone.)
2.
– kuncææ bâan hǎay chây-máy
– กุญแจบ้านหายใช่ไหม
– House keys disappeared right? (You lost the house keys right?)
3.
– nǎŋsɨ̌ɨ-dəən thaaŋ hǎay
– หนังสือเดินทางหาย
– The passport disappeared. (I lost my passport.)
4.
– bàt-khreedìt hǎay thîi-nǎy
– บัตรเครดิตหายที่ไหน
– Where did the credit card disappeared?
How to say that I found something that I lost?
To say that you found something that had been lost, you will need to use the word เจอ (cəə) or พบ (phóp). In speaking, I suggest you to use the word เจอ (cəə) because it is more common and casual. There are two ways that you can say this. See the structures below.
1.
– หา + บางอย่าง + เจอ (แล้ว)
– hǎa + something + cəə (lǽæw)
– found something
2.
– เจอ + บางอย่าง (แล้ว)
– cəə + something (lǽæw)
– found something
For example:
1.
– chán hǎa thoorasàp cəə lǽæw
– ฉันหาโทรศัพท์เจอแล้ว
– chán cəə thoorasàp lǽæw
– ฉันเจอโทรศัพท์แล้ว
– I found my phone already.
2.
– chán hǎa kuncææ bâan cəə lǽæw
– ฉันหากุญแจบ้านเจอแล้ว
– phǒm cəə kuncææ bâan lǽæw
– ผมเจอกุญแจบ้านแล้ว
– I found my house keys already.
3.
– kháw hǎa nǎŋsɨ̌ɨ-dəən-thaaŋ cəə lǽæw
– เขาหาหนังสือเดินทางเจอแล้ว
– kháw cəə nǎŋsɨ̌ɨ-dəən-thaaŋ lǽæw
– เขาเจอหนังสือเดินทางแล้ว
– He found his passport already.
4.
– phǒm hǎa bàt-khreedìt cəə thîi bâan
– ผมหาบัตรเครดิตเจอที่บ้าน
– phǒm cəə bàt-khreedìt thîi bâan
– ผมเจอบัตรเครดิตที่บ้าน
– I found my credit card at home.
And if you want to say that you did not find something you will use the word ไม่ (mây) before the word เจอ (cəə) as the example below.
1.
– chán hǎa thoorasàp mây cəə
– ฉันหาโทรศัพท์ไม่เจอ
– chán mây cəə thoorasàp
– ฉันไม่เจอโทรศัพท์
– I did not find my phone.
2.
– phǒm hǎa kuncææ bâan mây cəə
– ผมหากุญแจบ้านไม่เจอ
– phǒm mây cəə kuncææ bâan
– ผมไม่เจอกุญแจบ้าน
– I did not found my house keys.
3.
– kháw hǎa nǎŋsɨ̌ɨ-dəən-thaaŋ mây cəə
– เขาหาหนังสือเดินทางไม่เจอ
– kháw mây cəə nǎŋsɨ̌ɨ-dəən-thaaŋ
– เขาไม่เจอหนังสือเดินทาง
– He found his passport.
4.
– phǒm hǎa bàt-khreedìt mây cəə
– ผมหาบัตรเครดิตไม่เจอ
– phǒm mây cəə bàt-khreedìt
– ผมไม่เจอบัตรเครดิต
– I did not found my credit card.
Note: Please be reminded that saying hǎa + something + (mây) cəə is clear that you found (or not found) something you have lost, or something that is supposed to be existing there.
However saying (mây) cəə + something can mean that you found (or not found) something you have lost, but it can be used in a situation where you accidentally found something which is not yours.
For example:
Situation: You went to a public restroom and found someone else’s phone. So you can say:
– phǒm cəə thoorasàp nay hɔ̂ŋ-náam
– ผมเจอโทรศัพท์ในห้องน้ำ
– I found a phone in a restroom.
