How to say ‘by own self’ in Thai Language
This lesson will help you on how to say ‘by own self’ in Thai language such as ‘by myself, by yourself, by herself/himself, etc. using the word ʔeeŋ (เอง). Moreover, you will see the difference between the word ʔeeŋ (เอง) and คนเดียว (khon-diaw) since both is translated as ‘by own self’.

1. to do or to be something by own self
The first use of the word ʔeeŋ (เอง) is to say that the subject does or is something by own self without help from anyone else. There are two ways you can say it as below.
1.
subject + verb / adjective + ʔeeŋ
ประธาน + กริยา / คุณศัพท์ + เอง
2.
subject + verb / adjective + dûay tua-ʔeeŋ
ประธาน + กริยา / คุณศัพท์ + ด้วยตัวเอง
As you can see that the second structure above is longer, therefore, the first structure (using only the word ʔeeŋ (เอง)) is more common in speaking. Let’s see some examples to make it clear.
For example:
1.
– phǒm tham ʔaahǎan ʔeeŋ talɔ̀ɔt
– ผม ทำ อาหาร เอง ตลอด
– I always cook by myself.
2.
– kháw thaa sǐi bâan dûay tua-ʔeeŋ
– เขา ทา สี บ้าน ด้วยตัวเอง
– She painted the house by herself.
3.
– nɔ́ɔŋ-chaay kháw ruay ʔeeŋ
– น้องชาย เขา รวย เอง
– His younger brother is rich by himself.
(No one helps or makes him rice)
4.
– kháw phûut Thai kèŋ dûay tua-ʔeeŋ
– เขา พูด ไทย เก่ง ด้วยตัวเอง
– He speaks Thai well by himself.
(No one helps him to speak Thai well)
2. used by the person showing that they are affected by their own actions
The second use of the word ʔeeŋ (เอง) is show that you are affected by your own actions. With this expression, you need to use the word tua-ʔeeŋ (ตัวเอง) instead of ʔeeŋ (เอง) alone.
Therefore, this structure will be used with the reflexive verbs such as to like, to love, to blame, to hurt, etc. The structure is as below.
– subject + reflexive verb + tua-ʔeeŋ
– ประธาน + คำกริยาสะท้อนกลับ + ตัวเอง
For example:
1.
– khun khuan rák tua-ʔeeŋ
– คุณ ควร รัก ตัวเอง
– You should love yourself.
2.
– kháw mây khəəy thôot tua-ʔeeŋ
– เขา ไม่เคย โทษ ตัวเอง
– He never blames himself.
3.
– phǒm tham tua-ʔeeŋ cèp
– ผม ทำ ตัวเอง เจ็บ
– I hurt myself.
4.
– chán ca rák tua-ʔeeŋ mâak kwàa níi
– ฉัน จะ รัก ตัวเอง มาก กว่า นี้
– I will love myself more.
3. Used to emphasize the subject own self
You use ʔeeŋ (เอง) right after the subject to emphasize on it as the structure below. Removing ʔeeŋ (เอง) from the sentence will not change the meaning or make the sentence wrong.
– noun / pronoun + ʔeeŋ
– คำนาม / คำสรรพนาม + เอง
For example:
1.
– fææn chán bɔ̀ɔk wâa ʔaahǎan yîipùn ʔarɔ̀y mâak, tæ̀æ chán ʔeeŋ yaŋ mây khəəy kin
– แฟน ฉัน บอก ว่า อาหาร ญี่ปุ่น อร่อย มาก แต่ ฉัน เอง ยัง ไม่เคย กิน
– My partner told me that Japanese food is very delicious, but I, myself, never eat it before.
2.
– khun ʔeeŋ kɔ̂ɔ tɔ̂ŋ duu-lææ sùkkhaphâap ná
– คุณ เอง ก็ ต้อง ดูแล สุขภาพ นะ
– You, yourself, also have to take care of your health.
4. All by own self, alone
Here comes to the last topic of saying ‘own self’ in Thai. To say that the subject is all alone, do something alone, or to be alone, you will not use the word ʔeeŋ (เอง) anymore. You will need to use the word ‘khon diaw (คนเดียว)’.
– subject + verb / adjective + khon-diaw
– ประธาน + กริยา / คุณศัพท์ + คนเดียว
For example:
1.
– yaay phǒm yùu khon-diaw maa 20 pii lǽæw
– ยาย ผม อยู่ คนเดียว มา 20 ปี แล้ว
– My grannie has been living alone for 20 years already.
2.
– chán mây chɔ̂ɔp kin khâaw khon-diaw
– ฉัน ไม่ ชอบ กิน ข้าว คนเดียว
– I do not like eating alone.
3.
– kháw sâw khon-diaw
– เขา เศร้า คนเดียว
– She is sad alone.
(Only she is sad, no one else is sad.)
4.
– kháw moohǒo khon-diaw
– เขา โมโห คนเดียว
– He is angry alone.
(Only him is angry, no one else gets angry)
The difference between ʔeeŋ (เอง) and khon-diaw (คนเดียว)
‘ʔeeŋ (เอง)’ shows that the subject does or is something by their own skills, with the help of no one, while ‘khon-diaw (คนเดียว)’ shows that the subject does or is alone with no one around them.
For example:
– chán tham khanǒm-paŋ ʔeeŋ
– ฉัน ทำ ขนมปัง เอง
– I made bread by myself.
(The speaker made bread by herself without anyone help. However, there might be people around her in the kitchen.)
– chán tham khanǒm-paŋ khon-diaw
– ฉัน ทำ ขนมปัง คนเดียว
– I made bread alone.
(The speaker made bread alone in the kitchen. No one else was there with the speaker.)

– I heard that Chinese language is difficult, but I, myself, still never learn it.

– kháw yùu kàp khray mây-dâay. kháw tɔ̂ŋ yùu __________

– He cannot live with anyone. He has to live alone.
– kháw yùu kàp khray mây-dâay. kháw tɔ̂ŋ yùu khon-diaw
– เขาอยู่กับใครไม่ได้ เขาต้องอยู่ คนเดียว

– mǎa tua níi kàt hǎaŋ __________
– หมาตัวนี้กัดหาง __________
– This dog bit its own tail.
– mǎa tua níi kàt hǎaŋ tua-ʔeeŋ
– หมาตัวนี้กัดหาง ตัวเอง
