This is the last section of learn to read Thai. These special symbols in Thai have their own roles. We will look at them one by one.

1. ็ = ไม้ไต่คู้ (máay tày khúu)

You must have seen this symbol in the changed form of vowels เ-ะ (-e), แ-ะ (æ), and เ-าะ (-ɔ). Another way to think of ไม้ไต่คู้ (máay tày khúu) is that it makes the word shorter.

Reading 1

ลอก	ล็อก

And it is used to write the word ก็ (kɔ̂ɔ) which means also. It is the only word spelled this way.

 

2. ์ = ไม้ทัณฑฆาต (máay thantha-khâat)

This symbol is used to mute the letter that it is on.

3. -ๆ = ไม้ยมก (máay yamók)

This symbol is used to repeat a word, a phrase or a sentence.

Shorten Symbols in Thai

4. -ฯ = ไปยาลน้อย (pay-yaan-nɔ́ɔy)

It is used to shorten a long word which is familiar to the readers.

โปรดเกล้าฯ	โปรดเกล้า โปรดกระหม่อม
ทูลเกล้าฯ	ทูลเกล้า ทูลกระหม่อม

 

5. ฯลฯ = ไปยาลใหญ่ (pay yaan yày)

It has a similar function as the etc. (et cetera) in the English language It is used at the end of a list to indicate that further, similar items are included.

ในตลาดมีของหลายอย่าง เช่น ผัก ผลไม้ เนื้อสัตว์ น้ำปลา น้ำตาล ฯลฯ

เครื่องครัวมี ตะหลิว กระทะ หม้อ ฯลฯ

ป่าในประเทศไทยมี ช้าง กวาง เสือ งู ฯลฯ

 

These symbols are consonant or vowel

6. รร = รอ หัน (rɔɔ hǎn)

This special use of ร (r) เรือ has unique sounds. It is used as a vowel -ะ (-a) when there is a consonant after it.

And it has  ัน (-an) sound when there is no consonant after it.

7. ฤ, ฤา, ฦ, ฦา (rɨ́, rɨɨ, lɨ́, lɨɨ)

These are the vowels from Sanskrit. The Thai words with these vowels are the words borrowed from Sanskrit. We are going to focus on the ฤ (rɨ́) and learn a bit of ฤา (rɨɨ) in this section. It is not important to learn the ฦ (lɨ́) and ฦา (lɨɨ) because they are not used anymore.

 

ฤ (rɨ́) can be read in 3 different ways.

1. ฤ (rɨ́) pronounced as ริ (rí) when it comes after the letters ก ต ท ป ศ and ส

อังกฤษ	ตฤณมัย	ทฤษฎี	ปฤษฎางค์	ศฤงคาร	สฤษฎ์

Exception: ฤทธิ์ is pronounced as ริด (rít) even though it does not come after any letter.

 

2. ฤ (rɨ́) pronounced as รึ(rɨ́) when it comes after the letters ค น พ ม and ห

คฤหาสน์	นฤมล	พฤหัสบดี	มฤตยู	หฤทัย

Exception: ฤดู is pronounced as รึดู (rɨ́-duu) even though it does not come after any letter.

 

3. ฤ (rɨ́) pronounced as เรอ

For example: ฤกษ์ (rə̂ək)

ฤา (rɨɨ) is not commonly seen anymore. You will only see it in the word ฤาษี (rɨɨsǐi) which means a hermit.
