In this lesson we are going to focus on the short vowel เ-อะ (ə) and the long vowel เ-อ (əə). Let’s first practice on the เ-อะ (ə) vowel. This vowel is not a changed vowel.

Reading 1

The เ-อ (əə) vowel is a changed vowel. The changed form of this vowel is เิ. So you remove –อ and replace it with the final consonant. Also add ิ on top of the first consonant.

จ (c) + เ-อ (əə) = เจอ (cəə)
จ (c) + เ-อ (əə) + ด (d) = เจิด (cə̀ət)
ด (d) + เ-อ (əə) = เดอ (dəə)

เ-อ (əə) special rule

There is one special rule with the changed form of เ-อ (əə). The rule is when the final consonant is –ย, you just removed -อ and replace it with –ย without adding ิ.

ก (k) + เ-อ (əə) = เกอ (kəə)
ก (k) + เ-อ (əə) + ย (y) = เกย (kəəy)
