Three words can be used as the word for in Thai including ให้ (hây), สำหรับ (sǎmràp), and เพื่อ (phɨ̂a). We will see how to use them.

ให้ (hây) = for someone or something in Thai
Use when an action is done for someone or something.
Structure(1): verb + ให้ (hây) + someone or something
– phǒm sɨ́ɨ ʔaahǎan hây mǎa.
– I buy food for dogs.
– phǒm tham-ŋaan hây bɔrisàt.
– I work for a company.
– chán sák phâa hây lûuk.
– I wash clothes for my children.
สำหรับ (sǎmràp) = something is for someone in Thai
There are two situations you use สำหรับ (sǎmràp). The first one is to show that something is there for someone, or something is suitable for a specific purpose.
Structure(2): something + สำหรับ (sǎmràp) + someone or a purpose
– raakhaa níi sǎmràp samaachík.
– This price is for a member.
– hɔ̂ŋ-nɔɔn sǎmràp khæ̀æk.
– A bedroom for guests.
– nǎŋsɨ̌ɨ sǎmràp fɨ̀k ʔàan phaasǎa Thai.
– A book for practice reading Thai
The second situation is you use it as for someone’s opinion.
Structure(3): สำหรับ (sǎmràp) + a person
– sǎmràp phǒm, khun pen khon cay-dii mâak.
– For me, you are a very kind person.
– sǎmràp chán, khun phûut Thai kèŋ mâak.
– For me, you speak Thai very well.
phɨ̂a (เพื่อ) = for a sake of
Use this word when an action is done for the sake of someone or something.
Structure(4): verb/adjective + เพื่อ (phɨ̂a) + someone or something
– phǒm tham-ŋaan nàk phɨ̂a bɔrisàt.
– I work hard for the company.
– mæ̂æ nɨ́ay phɨ̂a lûuk.
– Mom is tired (from hard work) for her children.
– khun tham bæ̀æp níi phɨ̂a ʔaray.
– You do like this for the sake of what? (You do like this for what?)
Note: Nowadays you will see เพื่อสุขภาพ (phɨ̂a sùkkhaphâap) used with other things to show that those things are good for your health.
– ʔaahǎan phɨ̂a sùkkhaphâap.
– Food for health (Healthy food).
– mɔ̌ɔn phɨ̂a sùkkhaphâap
– Pillow for health. (Healthy pillow)
