In English, the word close can be used as a verb or adjective. However, there are three different words for each function which are commonly used as the word close in Thai.
ปิด (pìt) – to close
ปิด (pìt) is a word to close, shut, or turn off something that has been opened or turned on. It is also used when you close a place or when a place stops operating (schools, shops, companies, etc.)
Structure(1) : ปิด (pìt) + something
– mæ̂æ pìt pratuu.
– Mom closed the door.
– phǒm pìt phát-lom lǽæw.
– I already turn off the fan.
– kháw pìt khomphíwtə̂ə lǽæw.
– He already shut down his computer.
Structure(2) : a place + ปิด (pìt) = A place stops operating
– rooŋ-rian pìt wan sǎw-ʔaathít.
– Schools close on weekends.
– wan-níi praysanii pìt.
– Today, the post office is closed.
สนิท (sanìt) – to be close (in a relationship)
สนิท (sanìt) means to have a close relationship with someone. There are two different structures you can use to say it.
Structure(3) : สนิท (sanìt) + กับ (kàp) + someone
– phǒm mây sanìt kàp phîi-sǎaw.
– I am not close to my elder sister.
– khun sanìt kàp khray thîisùt nay khrɔ̂ɔp-khrua.
– Who are you closest to in the family?
Structure(4) : someone + กับ (kàp) + someone + สนิท กัน (sanìt kan)
– chán kàp phɨ̂an khon níi sanìt kan mâak.
– I and this friend are very close.
– phǒm kàp phîi-chaay sanìt kan mâak.
– My brother and I are very close.
ใกล้ (klây) – to be close to (a place or time)
ใกล้ (klây) means to be close or near to a place, location, or position to show the distance.
– bâan chán yùu klây rooŋ-phayaabaan.
– My house is close to the hospital.
– kháw nâŋ klây phǒm kəən-pay.
– He sat too close to me.
– rót raw cɔ̀ɔt klây kan.
– Our cars are parked close to each other.
ใกล้ (klây) means to be close or near to a certain time. It can be translated as the word almost or nearly in English as well.
– tɔɔn-níi klây 8 mooŋ lǽæw.
– Now it is close to 8 am.
– nɔ́ɔŋ-chaay chán rian klây còp lǽæw
– My younger brother is close to graduating.
– chán duu nǎŋ klây còp lǽæw
– I almost finished watching the movie.
