Asking a question ‘Have you ever … ?’ in Thai language
This article shows you how to ask a question ‘Have you ever…? in Thai language and how to answer to this question properly. In English, this question pattern belongs to a present perfect tense which indicates an event that happened in the past. ‘Have you ever…?’ is a question asking about the past experience. When you want to ask this question in Thai, you will need the word เคย (khəəy) which can be translated as the word ‘ever’ in English.
You can see the structure as below.
– Subject + khəəy + verb/adjective + a question word
– ประธาน + เคย + กริยา/คำคุณศัพท์ + คำถาม
– Have you ever …. ?
For example:
– khun khəəy pay kɔ̀ samǔy máy
– คุณ เคย ไป เกาะ สมุย ไหม
– Have you ever been to Samui Island?
– kháw khəəy pen fææn khun máy
– เขา เคย เป็น แฟน คุณ ไหม
– Has she ever been your girlfriend?
– khun khəəy hěn nɔ́ɔŋ-sǎaw phǒm máy
– คุณ เคย เห็น น้องสาว ผม ไหม
– Have you ever seen my younger sister?
How to answer to ‘Have you ever…? question
If your answer is ‘Yes, I have ever…’, then you will need to use the word khəəy (เคย). If your question will be ‘No, I have never…’, then you will say mây-khəəy (ไม่เคย) which is equivalent to the word never in English.
For example:
Question
– khun khəəy pay bâan kháw máy
– คุณ เคย ไป บ้าน เขา ไหม
– Have you ever been to his house?
Yes Answer
– chán khəəy pay bâan kháw
– ฉัน เคย ไป บ้าน เขา
– I have been to his house.
No Answer
– chán mây-khəəy pay bâan kháw
– ฉัน ไม่เคย ไป บ้าน เขา
– I have never been to his house.
The example above shows the full proper sentence of the question and its response. In speaking, you will not need to say that long. You can just simply say:
Yes Answer
– khəəy or khəəy pay
– เคย หรือ เคยไป
– Yes I have. or Yes, I have been.
No Answer
– máy khəəy or mây khəəy pay
– ไม่เคย หรือ ไม่เคยไป
– Never or never been
Easy right? Now let’s see some more different types of sentences.
For example:
– khun khəəy pay prathêet ʔaray nay yúròop
– คุณ เคย ไป ประเทศ อะไร ใน ยุโรป
– What country in Europe you have visited?
– kháw khəəy pen phɨ̂an sanìt khun chây-máy
– เขา เคย เป็น เพื่อน สนิท คุณ ใช่ไหม
– She used to be your close friend right?
– khun khəəy ʔòk-hàk kìi khráŋ
– คุณ เคย อกหัก กี่ ครั้ง
– How many times have you had a heart broken?
From the above examples, you can see that the word kheey (เคย) is not only equivalent to the word ‘ever’ in English, but also to the word ‘used to’. In Thai language, kheey (เคย) is used to mention on an event that happened and finished in the past. It shows that the subject has experienced something before.
