ให้, สำหรับ, and เพื่อ, the word ‘for’ in Thai language
In Thai language, there are THREE words that can be used as the word ‘for’ in English. The THREE WORDS are ‘hây (ให้), phɨ̂a (เพื่อ), and sǎmràp (สำหรับ)’.
1. hây (ให้)
There are three functions of this word including:
1) to give (verb)
2) for (preposition)
3) used as a conjunction connecting two sentences.
However, in this article we will focus only on its meaning as the word ‘for’. You use this word when you do something for someone.
For example:
1.
– phǒm sɨ́ɨ ʔaahǎan hây mǎa
– ผม ซื้อ อาหาร ให้ หมา
– I buy food for dogs.
2.
– phǒm tham-ŋaan hây bɔrisàt
– ผม ทำงาน ให้ บริษัท
– I work for a company.
3.
– chán sák phâa hây lûuk
– ฉัน ซักผ้า ให้ ลูก
– I wash clothes for my children.
2. sǎmràp (สำหรับ)
This word is used as the word ‘for’ to express below meaning.
1) especially for, suitable for, intended for receiver/purpose
2) For someone’s opinion
For example:
1.
– raakhaa níi sǎmràp samaachík
– ราคา นี้ สำหรับ สมาชิก
– This price is for a member.
2.
– hɔ̂ŋ-nɔɔn sǎmràp khæ̀æk
– ห้องนอน สำหรับ แขก
– A bedroom for guess.
3.
– sǎmràp phǒm, khun pen khon cay-dii mâak
– สำหรับ ผม คุณ เป็น คน ใจดี มาก
– For me, you are a very kind person.
3. phɨ̂a (เพื่อ)
This word can be used to express as below.
1) for someone’s sake
2) for a sake of something
3) in order to
3.1 For someone’s sake
For example:
1.
– phǒm tham-ŋaan nàk phɨ̂a bɔrisàt
– ผม ทำงาน หนัก เพื่อ บริษัท
– I work hard for the company.
2.
– mæ̂æ nɨ́ay phɨ̂a lûuk
– แม่ เหนื่อย เพื่อ ลูก
– Mom is being tired for children (work hard).
3.2 For a sake of something
For example:
1.
– ʔaahǎan phɨ̂a sùkkhaphâap
– อาหาร เพื่อ สุขภาพ
– Food for health (Healthy food).
2.
– khun tham bæ̀æp níi phɨ̂a ʔaray
– คุณ ทำ แบบ นี้ เพื่อ อะไร
– You do like this for the sake of what?
(Or ‘Why do you do this?’)
3.
– khun pay tham-ŋaan phɨ̂a ʔaray
– คุณ ไป ทำงาน เพื่อ อะไร
– You go to work for the sake of what?
(Or ‘Why do you go to work?)
3.2 in order to
For example:
1.
– phǒm kèp ŋən phɨ̂a sɨ́ɨ bâan
– ผม เก็บ เงิน เพื่อ ซื้อ บ้าน
– I save money for buying a house.
2.
– kháw rian phaasǎa Thai phɨ̂a maa tham-ŋaan thîi prathêet Thai
– เขา เรียน ภาษา ไทย เพื่อ มา ทำงาน ที่ ประเทศ ไทย
– She studies Thai in order to come to work in Thailand.
There are cases that these words can be replaceable.
Below sentences give the same meaning when you translate, but they give different feelings.
‘Special promotion for customers’
1.
– Promotion phísèet phɨ̂a lûuk-kháa
– โปรโมชั่น พิเศษ เพื่อ ลูกค้า
– Special promotion for customer’s sake.
(Emphasize on dedicating to customers.)
2.
– Promotion phísèet sǎmràp lûuk-kháa
– โปรโมชั่น พิเศษ สำหรับ ลูกค้า
– Special promotion for customer.
(This promotion is only for customer and not any other people. This will be the most suitable one to use in this sentence and good for writing.)
3.
– Promotion phísèet hây lûuk-kháa
– โปรโมชั่น พิเศษ ให้ ลูกค้า
– This is just saying that this special promotion is given for customers.
(This will be more of spoken language for this sentence.)
However, following the above rules can do good most of the time in using them. You will hear or say more of ‘hây’ (ให้) than the other two in daily life conversation. But all three are common words you will hear and read anyway. Feel free to drop any questions or comments.
